Ep. 307 – Just Say No to 3D Printing!
May 16th
TOPIC: Dave’s in Europe, and as you know when Sparky’s away Jay Garmon and I take the opportunity to go whole-geek on your ears! This week we’re talking about signing up for a one-way ticket to Mars, Commander Riker’s bizarre seating methods in TNG, and about a dozen other things (other than the one thing I promised we’d discuss of course … 3D printing! Maybe next time?). Jay delivers a fantastic geek trivia question as always:
Who was the only guest star who played themselves on Star Trek?
Only time for one coolsite of the week this week, but it is a lot of fun -
- GigWalk - Hire or become part of a smartphone army! Very interesting idea – People can earn money doing jobs for businesses through the Gigwalk mobile app, and businesses can hire people instantly!
We finish it the show off with “Rich Girls” by The Virgins!
Ep. 306 – Lance Fortnow’s “Golden Ticket”
May 1st
TOPIC: ”To P or not NP, that is the question. Whether ’tis nobler in the electronic minds of men to solve their problems quickly, or to suffer the slings and arrows of non-deterministic machine solutions in polynomial time … “ Alright, admittedly we wind up a bit off topic this week (though not so far afield as to be Bowdlerizing Shakespeare) but we have an absolute blast interviewing author Lance Fortnow about whether P will ever be equal to NP and solve all of life’s problems! A special shout-out goes to Lance, who was brave enough to join us physically, in-studio and take part in the whole show!
Jay Garmon joins us with some geek flavor and a fantastic geek trivia question too:
What sport was created in the Year 2000 by a single UseNet post?
No time at all for going off with multiple cool sites, but these are cool enough:
- Golden Ticket Book – One of many places to find out more about P, NP and Lance Fortnow!
- Computational Complexity – Lance’s long-running blog, and a great place to see what else is going on in theoretical computation.
We close out with our podcast only song of the week “One Day/The Reckoning Song”.
Ep. 305 – Alexandre Montagu discusses Viacom vs. YouTube
Apr 25th
TOPIC: Good friend of the show and incredibly well informed (and informative) guest Alexandre Montagu, Esq. returns to discuss the recent Viacom vs. YouTube ruling, and how this fits into the context of the DMCA, our rights as consumers of media, and more … we never do get around to discussing boat hulls, but pretty much anything else of interest is in here somewhere!
Dave sticks with us the whole show this week, making sure we stay on time and on track. He still can’t keep us from almost running over but fortunately just one cool site is all we need this week -
- Montagu Law – Connect with Alex’s law firm, and see what else he has going on! In addition, you’ll find links to his recently release book “Intellectual Property: Money and Power In A New Era” – well worth the read (and don’t forget to check out our original interview about this with him HERE).
Great retro style song to end this week with Little Boots’ “Every Night I Say a Prayer”.
Ep. 304 – Conglomeration Conflagration!
Apr 11th
TOPIC: No, Conglomeration attendees were not responsible for the riots in Louisville, though Jay Garmon‘s rundown of the annual Sci-Fi and table gaming convention may get you heated up! You’ll wish you were there … and not only that but Jay gives us another great geek trivia question:
How many times did Roger Ebert select a Science Fiction film as one of the year’s best?
We also provide you a few extra coolsites of the week this week -
- Erin Hulin Blog - A friend’s blog, detailing her struggles with MS and life. Support her fight, and don’t forget to look into ways that you can help with research, money and time!
- Incompetech - Free online graph paper, just download and print!
- PrintFreeGraphPaper.com – Free online graph paper, and this one you can define your own!
- AnythingAfter App – For iOS or Android, will tell you if there’s a reason to stick around after the credits!
- Brogue – Remember the text character “graphic” adventure game Rogue? This is just like it, but different!
After all is said and done, we finish it off with “Royals”. Come back in two weeks for our next show!
Ep. 303 – Webalo and the Rise of the BYOD Workforce!
Mar 20th
TOPIC: Peter Price, CEO of Webalo.com joins us today to discuss Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies, benefits, and dangers in private, public and healthcare environments. Users today (that means you!) are demanding – and getting – mobile access to more corporate data than ever before, and Peter gives us a great rundown on what companies are doing now and in the coming years to manage! Click through to this cool info graphic to learn more.
Dave “Sparky” Saganaki is with us as well, and Jay Garmon provides his usual amazing tech insight and trivia of the week:
What was the first Google service to be retired, and when did it happen?
We only get one coolsite of the week, but it’s a good one!
- Market Price – Searches recent sales on ebay and provides you with instant and accurate market prices for stuff you want to sell!
In addition, a friend of the show wanted us to mention this link – Erin’s Hope at http://erinhulin.com. Erin is a sufferer of MS and has kept a blog of her experiences and her ongoing fight. Well written and insightful; I’ll mention it appropriately on-air in a few weeks, but couldn’t resist giving a short plug to it here!
Finally, a fun and short remake of “Master and Servant” by Nouvelle Vague. Enjoy!
Ep. 302 – MoneyPlanSOS Talks Funny Money!
Mar 13th
TOPIC: Longtime listener and friend of the show, Steve Stewart of MoneyPlanSOS comes on to help you “pay attention, not interest!” Steve is a great guest, an interesting guy and a podcaster of his own (check it out at moneyplansos.com). We have a blast, with Dave “Sparky” Saganaki and Jay Garmon joining us, doling out insight and trivia:
What arguably non-science-fiction author is credited with first proposing augmented reality glasses?
- MoneyPlanSOS – Questions about finances, or getting out of debt? Tune in to guest Steve Stewart as he shares his wealth of experience and tips for getting you back on track!
No time for any other coolsites or music of the week, so just enjoy as we fade to black on this awesome episode …
Ep. 301 – Ford Motor’s PlugShare with Bill Frykman!
Feb 26th
TOPIC: Wondering just exactly how far you can go in your new electric vehicle? Afraid you might not have the juice to get you to grandma’s house this weekend? Bill Frykman from Ford Motor Company comes on air with us this week to discuss how the MyFord Mobile partnership with PlugShare resolves those concerns – and a whole lot more! It’s a great conversation about Ford and mobile tech, and how things are changing today in the automotive world.
Dave “Sparky” Saganaki joins us today, and we even get a few coolsites of the week in too!
- MyFord Mobile – Got a Ford? Get the app and get connected!
- PlugIntoFord.com – Find out everything about all the ford electric vehicles at this interactive site.
- FreebookSifter.com – All the free eBooks available on Amazon in an easy-to-use, rated and sorted interface!
We finish this awesome show off with a special request from my son to play “I Belong to You” by Muse!
Ep. 300 – Alex Knapp of Forbes and Asteroid Contingency Planning
Feb 19th
TOPIC: Wow! Episode 300 … and what a great one it is too! Oddly enough, our tricentennial goes unremarked, either through excessive humility or rampant obliviousness (long time listeners of the show will be placing their bets on obliviousness), but with Dave “Sparky” Saganaki, good friend Jay Garmon and new friend of the show Alex Knapp of Forbes magazine tech and blog fame, this is an outstanding reflection on the past years of broadcast!
Jay of course provides us with a great stumper for the coming week:
Who was the one (and only) person in history to have ever been hit directly by a meteorite?
With this lineup there was no way to fit in coolsites of the week, but don’t forget to tweet with Alex @TheAlexKnapp! We end with “The Ship Song” by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds.
Ep. 299 – Happy Snaky New Year!
Feb 13th
TOPIC: That’s right, Mike and Dave are right on top of the Chinese New Years celebration! Plus, Dave tells about LibreOffice’s new offering, and we tell you when it’s OK to poke your friend and when you should just SnapChat them up
Jay Garmon is not actually, physically present, but he gives us a serial trivia session with this question that is just oh so a propos this week for our East Coast friends:
What landmark piece of software was created as the direct result of a blizzard?
There’s even time for a few coolsites of the week!
- Mastaba Snoopy: Remember those “choose your own adventures” from when you were a kid? This is exactly … and nothing … like that!
- Pulp-O-Mizer: Make old pulp magazine covers (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) your own! Lots of fun to get lost in if you’re snowed in this weekend …
We missed the timing and lose a few minutes at the end of the show, but I made sure you get to an earful of the beautiful “Default” by Django Django anyways!.
Ep. 298 – PBS American Experience’s “Silicon Valley” Filmmaker Randall MacLowry
Jan 31st
Randall MacLowry, Silicon Valley filmmaker of PBS American Experience Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (159)TOPIC: Fabulous show this week, as we get a sneak peek and in-depth discussion about the upcoming documentary “Silicon Valley.” Randall MacLowry gives us his take on the genesis of not only the technologies and hardware we depend on every day, but also the innovations to culture and business that men like Robert Noyce (founder of Intel) heralded. The show comes out February 5th on your local PBS station, so set your DVR’s today!
Jay Garmon answers last week’s question and as always gives us another fantastic Geek Trivia question for the coming week:
What is the oldest viable DNA sample ever recovered?
No time for coolsites of the week (Randy was just too great of an interview), but you should go to PBS’ website for the “Silicon Valley” program for more information about the program and related content.
On-air song of the week this week is “Line of Fire” by Junip!
